A Resolution by the Executive Board of the Association of Rice Alumni
Honoring the Memory of John Edward Parish
John Edward Parish, Professor of English, Resident Associate of Wiess College, Teacher, Scholar, Mentor, Loyal Friend of Rice University and of generations of students, contributed immeasurably during his lifetime to the sense of community at Rice in ways that went far beyond the classroom and endured long after graduation day.
Kind, gentle, witty, erudite, warm, and concerned always about others, John Parish demonstrated the best qualities that can be achieved by the human spirit.
One who lived his personal as well as his professional life “all for Rice’s honor,” John Parish will be long remembered by those who knew him in the Rice community of students, faculty, staff, and alumni and his memory will also be cherished by the others yet to come who will benefit from the surviving spirit of the values he held most highly.
Be it therefore resolved by the Executive Board of the Association of Rice Alumni that we note the irreplaceable loss of our friend, John Parish, and acknowledge our gratitude for his legacy to us: a resolute dedication to the pursuit of excellence, a constant regard for the needs of other, and a firm commitment to be of good cheer.
